Fiber artists to speak at July 14 meeting

Mixed Media: Moon Over The Ocean

Cathie and Sarah Laska of Terre Haute will speak and share examples of their work at the 6 p.m. July 14 River City Art Association meeting in the Vigo County Public Library, Seventh and Poplar streets.

Cathie has over 50 years of experience in fiber arts, beginning with a weaving class at Indiana University and continuing to explore and never get tired of the many ways a person can put fibers together. She was an art teacher for 36 years, so she dabbled in many areas of art. She loves to paint, draw, photograph, and most recently she has returned to her interest in dying yarns and eco-dying plant fibers onto silk with acid dyes, to create beautiful scarves. Another interest Cathie has is painting with fleece, using various types of wool fibers of various colors to needle felt landscapes and abstract art. Weaving and felting are activities she does with her daughter, Sarah.

Sarah Laska has been working in art her whole life! She is an enthusiastic weaver, felter, painter and photographer. She and her mother enjoy working on art activities together. Both Sarah and Cathie took a Navajo weaving class in New Mexico some years ago and her love for weaving grew from there. She presently has her artwork on display at the First Unitarian Universalist Church at 1875 Fruitridge Ave., featuring photography and weavings. She is enthusiastically trying new techniques and loves nature as motivation in her work.

Monthly meetings and programs are free and open to the public, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Arrive at 5:30 for a meet and greet with RCAA members.
