Congratulations to River City Art Association member Donald E. Turner of Terre Haute for his Best of Show artwork in the Vigo County Public Library’s Big Read Art Competition.
“Janie Crawford Through the Eyes of ‘Lady Day,'” pastel on paper, was chosen from several works by area artists asked to submit entries inspired by the 2017 book selection, “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” by Zora Neale Hurston.
“The novel explores traditional gender roles and the relationship between man and woman,” Turner said of his interpretation. “There is a parallel in the expectations in the lives of Janie Crawford and Billie Holiday.”
