Goddess Within by Ruthann Brady received an Artists’ Choice Award and a Third Place in 3D/Mixed Media in juried exhibitions in Terre Haute in 2015.
River City Art Association founding member Ruthann Brady is the featured artist throughout October in the Vigo County Public Library in Terre Haute.
Brady became interested in painting after she retired from her career in communications to accompany her husband to Europe when his work presented the opportunity in 1997. “With time for reflection and meditation I realized my real life journey had just begun. I searched for ways of self expression, exploration. After countless beginnings to write how I felt, I realized I express myself in a visual way.”
It was after a vacation in Wales that Brady bought her first paints and brushes. They stayed at a Farm Bed and Breakfast. Their host was a retired art teacher. “She told me that anyone can learn to paint. I have been learning ever since.”
Brady has more than 25 works professionally framed and available for showing. “I began painting as a realistic artist and evolved to a mixed media abstract impressionistic style.”
Brady paints mostly on heavy watercolor paper, clay board, and hard board panels. Her first works were watercolor. Now she uses acrylic, encaustic and oil and cold wax.
“My art is always in transition. It evolves as I go through experiences and explorations. I often begin a painting without any preconceived plan. I flow with the rhythm of the process, pouring, manipulating and allowing the visual magic to take me on a journey.”
Brady chooses the colors, medium, substrate, size and amounts and direction of flow … and beautiful colors, patterns and forms emerge.
“This is my favorite way to create as I feel my real spirit is imparted to the painting and hopefully will resonate allowing the viewers a spiritual journey of their own.”
Brady’s library exhibit will be featured again in November in RCAA’s Artist of the Month Gallery in Harrison College in Terre Haute.
Other mixed media/abstract works by Brady are on exhibit in the Aire Wellness Center at Amada Plaza in Terre Haute, and coming soon at Moon Dance diner, formerly the Harmony Diner, in Harmony, Indiana.
RCAA meets at 6 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month in the VCPL. For membership information visit RiverCityArt.org or call president Mike Bender at 812-251-7724.
