River City Art Association Inc. and the Vigo County Public Library will feature photography by Spencer Young of Clinton throughout August in the library at Seventh and Poplar streets.

Photography was only a hobby for Young growing up in LaGrange, Ill., a Chicago suburb. During his four years of high school, he worked as a photographer for the school yearbook. In college, he worked part time as a darkroom assistant. He also worked several years for a portrait and wedding studio.

Famous photographer Ansel Adams became Young’s artistic hero, and after retirement from the coal business in 2000, Young became a full-time amateur landscape photographer.

Young’s images were awarded first place in the 2012 and 2013 RCAA Fall Exhibition, second place in the 2013 Midwest Photography Show at the Bicentennial Art Center and Museum in Paris, Ill., and honorable mention in the 2014 Midwest Photography Show, currently on exhibit through Aug. 29.

Young also has photographs on display in the Arts Illiana Sales Gallery and at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

As artist of the month at the library, Young shares a few of his travel photos abroad.

In 1983, he visited mainland China where he captured colorful rowboats in a race during the Dragon Boat Festival.

On a trip to Indonesia in 1983, he photographed a rice farmer directing an ox-drawn plow in a Balinese valley. He also captured Balinese village children who had gathered to watch a traditional dance performance.

In 1999, he toured the Taurus Mountains in the headwaters of the Euphrates River in south Turkey.

In 2004, he visited Thera, a city on a cliff along the coast of the Greek island Santorini. With Santorini in the background, Young captured tour boats taking visitors to the volcano that erupted and destroyed the Minoan civilization in the second millennium BC.

RCAA members meet on the second Tuesday of each month in the library. For more information visit rivercityart.org or contact president Todd Stokes at 812-232-0048.
