River City Art Association president Mary Mayhew received the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association Award of Merit on June 25 at Swope Art Museum’s 3rd Annual William T. Turman Plein Air Competition awards ceremony in the Deming Hotel in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Mayhew painted at six locations, mainly on the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology campus, during the June 20 through 25 event.
Her oil painting of the Musallem Union building at Rose-Hulman was selected for the IPAPA Award of Merit from about 60 paintings made by participating artists.

RCAA members Jennifer Minnis and Maria Deis also took part in the competition. Minnis entered watercolors of the Carmelite Monastery in Terre Haute and the Sisters of Providence Motherhouse at St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Deis set up her canvas and oil paints to recreate a backyard scene at home in Vigo County.
Nine other awards were presented at the June 25 ceremony by juror Julio Suarez, professor of art at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich., with a MFA in painting from Indiana University Bloomington and BFA in illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
All paintings in the 3rd Annual William T. Turman Plein Air Exhibition will be on display July 1 through Aug. 15 in The Gallery at Arts Illiana, 23 N. Sixth St. in Terre Haute.
