Third Place Mixed Media: Someone I Once Knew, Self Portrait of an Artist by Valerie Greenwell

A River City Art Association member will showcase her work during the first quarter of 2024 in the Regional Hospital cafeteria gallery. Valerie Greenwell, a quilter, graphic designer, photographer and author, is the artist being featured in this RCAA Community Outreach Gallery.

Valerie graduated from Ivy Tech in 2008 with a degree in photography and graphic design and began working with fabric and threads in 2012. She has become well known for her quilted portraits, landscapes and vibrant abstracts. Many of her works begin as hand-drawn sketches which she then converts to either patterns for quilts or graphics for print works.

She uses programs such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Affinity Designer to assist in the creation of digital works and pattern making.

Valerie has written and published more than 25 individual patterns and in 2021 she published her first full-length instructional quilt pattern book, titled “Big Star Beautiful.” That was later followed by two more books, “Puzzler’s Dream” and “On Point,” to complete the threebook Big Block Beautiful Quilt Series, all of which are now available at Wabash Valley Fabrics.
