RCAA announces winners in 15th Annual Juried Exhibition

Winter’s Past by Mike Lunsford of Rosedale, Best of Show and 2nd Place in Photography

River City Art Association recognized the talent of 29 Indiana and Illinois artists Aug. 4 during its 15th Annual Juried Exhibition opening reception in the lobby of First Financial Bank in downtown Terre Haute.

Exhibition juror Tanmaya Bingham, gallery director at Indiana State University, announced winners.

Best of Show and second place in the photography category went to “Winter’s Past” by Mike Lunsford of Rosedale. Bingham noted that she chose Lunsford’s work for its “lovely texture and composition.” The high contrast between foreground and background, she added, exemplifies the combination of creativity with technique and emotion.

First-place medallions were awarded to Steve Harrold of Vigo County for his painting, “Laughter”; Jim Rhodes of Brazil for his drawing, “Tennessee Pass Colorado; Jan McVay of Tangier for her mixed media entry, “Wooded Den”; Elise Spaid-Roberts of Terre Haute for her 3-D entry, “Means To The End”; Todd Stokes of Dennison, Illinois, for his “Standing Proud” in the glass/ceramic category; and Sheila K. Ter Meer of Brazil for her photography entry, “Hannibal Trolley Tour.”

Second-place honors went to Wayne Ilderton for his pyrography drawing, “Moe, Larry, and Curly”; Jo Rich-Vadas of Marshall, Illinois, for her acrylic painting, “Nature’s Mosaic”; Richard Acton for “Work With Squares” in the glass/ceremic category; Elise Spaid-Roberts for a mixed media entry, “Isle of Lewis”; and Todd Stokes for his 3-D entry, “Small Box of Trees.”

Third-place awards went to Cathie Laska of Terre Haute for a mixed media entry titled “Interwoven Quilt”; Edith Acton of Terre Haute for a fused glass wall hanging, “Burst of Love”; Jim Rhodes for his drawing, “Big Tunnel on the B&O in Southern Indiana”; Shelley Crouch for her watercolor, “Graceful Hunter”; and Susan Thiemann-Wynne for her photography/digital entry, “Painted Entanglement.”

The Artist Choice award went to Jan McVay for her first place mixed media piece, “Wooded Den.”

All 78 works of art can be viewed during banking hours through Aug. 31. Winning pieces will be featured again throughout September in an RCAA display in the lobby of First Financial’s Springhill bank. The People’s Choice award will be announced Aug. 31 and included in the September display.

Other participating artists are Debra Butler, Kara Cress, Annie Cunningham, Kyma Drake, Michael R. Elmore, Valerie Greenwell, Shannon Hahn, Madison King, Mary Mayhew, Alex McNichols-Torreledo, Dian Der Ohanian Phillips, Donna Pomfret, Sandy Ridge-Fisher, Judith Lynn Smith and Thomas Wright.

  1. Good writeup with the Judge comments! But also need to add a second place award went to Mike Lunsford. And what about Artists Choice (which I forgot to vote on) do we give an award for that? I was not informed to write a check…need to figure that out…thanks. Debra
